What kind of people take the NEBOSH National General Certificate?
Managers, supervisors and staff from all types of organisations who need a broad understanding of health and safety issues. The certificate helps them manage risks effectively.
Is this qualification recognised?
The NEBOSH National General Certificate meets the academic requirements for Technician membership (TechIOSH) of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and Associate membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).
What does the qualification cover?
The NEBOSH National General Certificate covers the main legal requirements for health and safety in the UK, identification and control of workplace hazards, and the practical application of this knowledge. The syllabus is mapped to the National Occupational Standards for Health and Safety owned by ENTO. No previous health and safety knowledge is required but candidates should note the assessment includes a requirement to write a short report.
The qualification is divided into three units, each of which is assessed separately:
- Management of Health and Safety (NGC1)
- Controlling workplace hazards (NGC2)
- Health and safety practical application (NGC3)

There are a number of study options available to delegates:
E-Learning
Study in your own time and at your own pace. Tutor support is available and you can choose when you would like to start and finish. You will also have the option to choose where you sit your exam.
Blended Learning
A mix of classroom and e-learning, this option is flexible and convenient and allows delegates to study in their own time.
Classroom
If you have the option to take day release from your job then this option could be for you. The course is usually completed over several weeks, taking one day out each week.
Fast Track
A fast track course will allow delegates to complete the course in one go, usually over 10 days with the exam at the end of the course.
